HOW IT WORKS

Why IV works when pills don't

During a migraine, the digestive system slows significantly, a phenomenon called gastric stasis. Oral triptans and NSAIDs sit unabsorbed in the stomach while the pain escalates. Intravenous delivery bypasses this entirely, reaching therapeutic levels in the bloodstream within minutes.

The protocol targets four overlapping mechanisms:

Vascular tension. High-dose Magnesium Sulfate relaxes constricted cerebral blood vessels and suppresses cortical spreading depression, the electrical wave associated with migraine auras. Studies show low serum magnesium is present in up to 50% of patients during acute migraine attacks.

Neurogenic inflammation. Toradol (ketorolac) inhibits COX-mediated prostaglandin production, reducing the perivascular inflammation that drives the throbbing pain component.

Nausea. Zofran (ondansetron) blocks serotonin receptors in the gut and brainstem chemoreceptor trigger zone, stopping nausea at its neurological source.

Dehydration. Normal saline restores fluid balance quickly. Dehydration is a documented migraine trigger and prolongs recovery time when left unaddressed.

What happens during your session

Each session begins with a brief health assessment by our licensed nursing staff. A small IV catheter is placed and the infusion runs for approximately 45 to 60 minutes in our dedicated low-light recovery suite.

Most patients notice a reduction in nausea within the first 15 to 20 minutes. Headache intensity typically begins to fall before the infusion is complete. After the session, patients rest briefly before discharge. For standard migraine sessions, most are able to drive themselves home.

The nursing staff conducts a short post-session check before you leave to confirm there are no adverse responses.

WHEN TO COME IN

When to book a session

You are in an active migraine and oral medication is not working or cannot be kept down. You experience recurring migraines and want a preventative Magnesium loading session. You are in the aura phase and want to attempt early intervention before full onset. You are dealing with rebound headaches from overuse of OTC pain relievers.

Call ahead if possible. Walk-ins are welcome based on availability.

Every infusion at The DRIPBaR Bedford is administered by licensed registered nurses. Prior to treatment, each patient completes a health intake and contraindication screening. Toradol is not administered to patients with a history of GI bleeding, severe renal impairment, NSAID allergy, or third-trimester pregnancy.

All compounds are sourced from licensed sterile compounding pharmacies. This is a clinical infusion protocol delivered in a medical setting by qualified nursing staff.
