HOW IT WORKS

Two clinical pathways, one protocol

Oral pain relievers are limited by absorption rate, first-pass metabolism, and GI tolerance. IV delivery bypasses all three. At therapeutic concentrations, the compounds in this protocol act on inflammation and central pain sensitisation at the same time rather than sequentially.

The anti-inflammatory pathway (Toradol): Ketorolac (Toradol) is a prescription-strength NSAID that inhibits COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes, blocking prostaglandin synthesis at the tissue level. This reduces localised swelling, joint inflammation, and systemic inflammatory markers without opioid receptor involvement, meaning there is no dependency risk and no sedation that impairs function.

The neurological reset (low-dose Ketamine): For patients with chronic or nerve-related pain, standard anti-inflammatories address only part of the picture. Persistent pain rewires central pain processing, a phenomenon called central sensitisation, causing the nervous system to amplify pain signals disproportionately. Low-dose Ketamine acts as an NMDA receptor antagonist, interrupting this amplified signalling and reducing overall pain sensitivity. Research published in Pain Medicine (Niesters et al., 2014) supports sub-anaesthetic Ketamine as a clinically meaningful intervention for centrally sensitised pain states.

Who this session is designed for

Chronic nerve pain and fibromyalgia. Patients with persistent, widespread pain often have a significant central sensitisation component that standard anti-inflammatories do not reach. The low-dose Ketamine element is specifically relevant here.

Severe migraines and headaches when standard treatments have failed. The combination of Toradol and Magnesium targets both the neurogenic inflammation and the vascular tension component of migraine pain.

Post-surgical and post-injury recovery. The IV anti-inflammatory protocol helps reduce systemic inflammation in the early recovery window, when oral medication compliance is difficult or GI tolerance is low.

Joint and muscle pain from arthritis flares or acute musculoskeletal injuries. Toradol's COX inhibition is particularly effective for the prostaglandin-mediated inflammation present in both acute injury and inflammatory arthritis.

Each session begins with a health intake and contraindication screening conducted by our licensed nursing staff. This step is not a formality. Toradol and Ketamine each carry specific contraindications that the nursing team reviews before any compounds are prepared.

The infusion itself runs for approximately 45 to 60 minutes depending on the personalised protocol. Our nursing staff monitors the session continuously. Many patients notice a measurable reduction in pain intensity before the infusion is complete.

For standard pain relief sessions without Ketamine, most patients are able to drive themselves home. Sessions that include Ketamine require a pre-arranged ride home, as the compound can cause temporary lightheadedness. This is a firm clinical requirement, not a precaution we leave to patient discretion.

What you should know before booking

Every infusion at The DRIPBaR Bedford is administered by licensed registered nurses. All compounds are sourced from licensed sterile compounding pharmacies and prepared to clinical standards.

Toradol is not administered to patients with a history of active GI bleeding, severe renal impairment, NSAID or aspirin allergy, bleeding disorders, or third-trimester pregnancy. The five-day FDA dosing limit for ketorolac applies; this protocol is designed for acute and periodic use, not continuous administration.

Low-dose Ketamine is not appropriate for patients with a history of psychosis, uncontrolled hypertension, or active substance use disorders. These are reviewed during the pre-session intake.
